Clara Sterling is the enigmatic caretaker of Thaddeus Beaumont and, as revealed in the Season 1 finale, the ageless architect behind Nowhere's isolation. For centuries, she has manipulated events and people to maintain the town's supernatural balance, carefully curating who enters and what secrets remain hidden. Her connection to Abigail Fleming forms one of the series' central mysteries.

Background

Almost nothing is confirmed about Clara's origins. She presents herself as Thaddeus Beaumont's caretaker, maintaining his mansion and attending to his needs. However, glimpses throughout Season 1 reveal she has been in Nowhere far longer than any living resident, including Thaddeus himself.

Episode 4's "Echoes of the Past" provides the most direct evidence of her longevity when Abigail glimpses a photograph of Clara from Nowhere's founding days, appearing identical to her present self.

Clara oversees a vast repository of arcane knowledge: documents, artifacts, and historical records stored in Beaumont Manor's hidden library. These archives contain information critical to understanding Nowhere's supernatural history and the cosmic forces at play.

Agelessness

Clara's immortality is confirmed but never explained in Season 1. Key questions left unanswered:

The show bible describes her as "an immortal being tasked with observing and subtly guiding Nowhere through the ages," but doesn't specify what kind of being.

Production Note: According to interviews, Clara's true nature was planned to be revealed in Season 3. She would have been connected to one of the indigenous spiritual traditions that recognized Nowhere's power before European settlement.

Role in Nowhere

Clara functions as Nowhere's secret guardian with several responsibilities:

Curator of Residents

She carefully manipulates which troubled souls find their way to Nowhere, ensuring the town receives people whose presence serves its supernatural balance (or Thaddeus's experiments).

Keeper of Secrets

Her archives contain centuries of accumulated knowledge about cryptids, supernatural phenomena, and the town's history. She controls access to this information strategically.

Protector of the Balance

Clara works to maintain the delicate equilibrium between Nowhere's human and supernatural elements. Her methods sometimes conflict with Thaddeus's more aggressive approach.

Information Broker

She provides cryptic guidance to Abigail's investigations, always revealing just enough to be helpful without exposing larger truths.

Season 1 Arc

Clara maintains her serene facade throughout most of Season 1, dropping hints that suggest deeper knowledge:

The season finale establishes Clara as the person who saved Abigail as an infant, but her exact relationship to Abigail's parents remains unclear. Did she serve them? Was she ordered to protect Abigail? Or did she act on her own initiative?

Relationships

Complicated Abigail Fleming - Clara has watched over Abigail since infancy, spiriting her away for protection. Her feelings appear genuinely protective, though her methods involve manipulation and secrecy. The nature of their connection is the series' biggest unresolved mystery.
Complicated Thaddeus Beaumont - Serves as his caretaker but clearly operates with her own agenda. Their dynamic suggests centuries of tension balanced by mutual necessity. She sometimes undermines his more dangerous plans.
Allied Nowhere Itself - Clara seems more bonded to the town than to any individual, suggesting her loyalty is to maintaining the location's supernatural significance rather than serving any person.

The Jackalope

One of the show's delightful details is Clara's pet Jackalope, a rabbit with antlers from American folklore. The creature provides moments of levity in otherwise tense scenes.

The Jackalope is never named on screen. Fan speculation about its name includes:

Some fans theorize the Jackalope is more than a pet possibly a familiar, a manifestation of Clara's power, or even another immortal being in animal form.

Fan Theories

Clara is Abigail's Mother Most Popular

The most widely believed theory. Evidence: Clara's protective behavior, her presence since Abigail's infancy, her "otherworldly" nature matching descriptions of Abigail's mother, and the deliberate vagueness about how she "spirited Abigail away." Counter-argument: If true, why wouldn't the show reveal it in Season 1?

Full theory breakdown

Clara is the Original Wendigo Debated

A darker theory suggests Clara is a reformed or contained version of the Wendigo spirit, explaining her immortality and her complex relationship with the entity. Her role as "guardian" could be penance for past destruction.

She's from Another Dimension Speculative

Given the show's planned multiverse elements, some fans believe Clara is from the same otherworldly realm as Abigail's mother, sent to watch over humanity's interaction with supernatural forces.

Clara is Bound to Nowhere Popular

Her immortality may be tied to the town itself she cannot leave or she will age/die. This would explain her dedication to maintaining the town's balance and isolation.

SHE'S THE MOTHER. I will die on this hill. Everything points to it. The way she looks at Abigail in Episode 1?? That's a mother's look. I don't care what anyone says.
NowhereSkeptic June 21, 2019
If she was the mother they would have revealed it. The finale was the perfect time. I think it's too obvious and they were going for a misdirect.
WendigoWatcher June 21, 2019
OR they were saving it for Season 2 and now we'll never know because THIS SHOW GOT CANCELLED AND I'M STILL MAD ABOUT IT

Can we talk about the jackalope more? I need more jackalope content. Is there any fan art? Does anyone know what props they used?
